Before you start
Gather four things: the device itself, an up-to-date system, your credentials, and an Apple ID to download an app.
- Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K: both models have the App Store. Older Apple TV models (3rd generation and earlier) do not.
- tvOS up to date: check under Settings → System → Software Updates.
- Your credentials: the Xtream Codes details (server URL, username, password) or an M3U link, sent when you sign up.
- An Apple ID: required to install an app, including by confirming from the paired iPhone.
Step 1 — Install an IPTV player from the App Store
From the Apple TV home screen, open the App Store. In the search field, type "IPTV" or "Xtream". Several players support Xtream Codes and M3U: pick the one whose listing clearly mentions both connection methods.
Also check in the description that the player handles the EPG (programme guide) and HLS playback, then start the installation. If the App Store asks for confirmation, validate it with your Apple ID.
Step 2 — Connect with Xtream Codes or M3U
Open the player and choose the connection method. Depending on the app, one or the other is offered, sometimes both:
- Xtream Codes API: enter the server URL, the username and the password. This is the most complete method: channels, guide and catalogue load automatically.
- M3U playlist: paste the link sent when you sign up, or type it in with the remote. Loading takes longer and the EPG often has to be linked separately.
When the choice is available, prefer Xtream Codes: there is less to type and the playlist updates by itself.
Step 3 — EPG and favourites
The programme guide appears once the playlist has loaded. If it stays empty, open the player settings and refresh the EPG, or check that the EPG link is filled in.
Then build your favourites: most players let you add a channel to a dedicated list by holding down a button on the remote. Group the channels you watch most often, and you will save time at start-up.
Step 4 — Playback quality settings
In the player settings you can choose the stream quality. On an Apple TV 4K, leave the video output on automatic: tvOS adapts the resolution to the television and the incoming stream.
- Video format: Settings → Video and Audio → Format, keeping "Automatic" if your television handles HDR.
- If a channel stutters, try a lower quality inside the player rather than in the tvOS settings.
- Enable full-screen playback and turn off unnecessary animations if the app offers it.
Step 5 — Network: Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi
The Apple TV 4K has an Ethernet port: a direct cable remains the most stable option, especially for 4K. On the Apple TV HD, or if a cable is not possible, prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Move the Apple TV closer to the router, or add an access point if the signal is weak.
- Avoid downloading large files at the same time as you watch.
- Check which network is in use under Settings → Network.
Troubleshooting
- Empty playlist: check the server URL (no spaces, with the port), the username and the password, then reload the playlist.
- Sound but no picture: the channel is probably broadcasting an audio-only stream, or its video codec is not supported. Try another channel or switch player.
- Buffering: try another quality, restart the Apple TV (Settings → System → Restart) and check the network.
- The app keeps closing: force-quit it from the app switcher, then open it again.
The alternative: casting from an iPhone or iPad
If you would rather not install anything on the Apple TV, you can play the IPTV on an iPhone or iPad and send the picture to the television over AirPlay: open the video, tap the casting icon, then choose your Apple TV. Quality then depends on the network, and the phone must stay on during playback.
With a suitable player and the right credentials, the Apple TV becomes a smooth, discreet IPTV player — and AirPlay remains a handy fallback from an iPhone.
